Multiply by Six Million is the culmination of Evvy Eisen’s fifteen-yearlong project photographing holocaust survivors and collecting their personal stories. The film presents Eisen’s beautiful, original, black and white gelatin silver prints as the subjects recount their experiences during and after the World War II.

The film artfully combines Eisen’s photographic portraits, memories voiced by survivors, and a haunting solo piano score performed by Nicole Milner, herself a survivor photographed by Eisen.

Multiply by Six Million aired on the Sundance Channel in May 2008.

"A paid collaborator informed the Germans about our location, and one night they came and took away my parents and my seven-year-old sister. That night, I wasn’t home because my bed was needed for a relative who was visiting us. He was taken in my place. When I returned the next day all I found was the family photo album on the floor. I spent the rest of the war hiding in the local boarding school waiting for the return of my family. But no one ever came back."

ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS

Evvy Eisen, Photographer, Producer, Director
Eisen was born and educated in New York City and currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She works as a freelance photographer specializing in environmental portraits, producing fine art, black and white, silver gelatin prints. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC, the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, the de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University, and the Centre de Documentation Juive Contemporaine in Paris. She has taught photography at the elementary school through university levels. The film Multiply by Six Million is based on her fifteen-yearlong project photographing Holocaust survivors. An exhibition of the resulting photographs is currently on a multi-year tour.

Kelly Hendricks, Film Editor, Co-Producer, Co-Director
Hendricks, a native of the San Francisco bay area, has worked as a film editor and producer for 19 years and currently works at CNET in San Francisco where he is Senior Editor and Technical Director. He has produced projects for the Sundance Channel, KGO, KPIX, KRON, KQED, the Discovery Channel, The History Channel, and the USA network. Kelly has earned four local Emmys and a national Emmy nomination for Separate Lives, Broken Dreams, a documentary on Chinese immigration.
